Hair Preserved on Hairpins from Graves
Hairpins were always very intimate pieces of jewellery for women while they were alive. In Chinese culture the dead have always been fully dressed for the funeral rituals and when they were buried (just as in the West in former centuries). Their grave goods ensured they can have a good life in the future world.
As in the West the dead woman would be made up and have her hair dressed in a beautiful fashion for her funeral - with a lot of hairpins in her hair when she was buried. The hairpins will have been the ones she used in her previous life. In the coffin, the corrosion of the metal hairpins can protect and preserve organic materials in close contact with the metal. This is especially true for copper alloy objects. Of course nothing is in closer contact with the dead person than her hairpins, which are closely wound into her hair.
Very occasionally, on some hairpins, we can see the remains of hair strands preserved in the corrosion. Sometimes the hair itself is preserved and sometimes only the impression of the hair is visible in the hard corrosion. This is something we see in archaeological objects too. In some archaeological objects, hair, textiles, leather and even insect remains may be preserved on corroded metal objects.*
